Got some Gravity Falls thoughts? Kink thoughts? Just thoughts in general?

Maybe other people have some, too!

Dipper and Mabel's Parents

(Anonymous) 2017-02-08 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
So what are people's thoughts/headcanons on Dipper and Mabel's parents, all? Neglectful, good-natured but out of it, just plain weird?

I tend to think they're good-natured but kind of disconnected. Dipper and Mabel don't really ping me as abused or outright neglected, just kinda...in their own world. I could see their parents being the kind who hear that Dipper wants to be a ghost hunter or whatever and just go, "Oh...okay! Do your best!" without really engaging other than with vague supportive noises.

In contrast to the previous anon, I would personally lean toward saying that they're quite neglectful. I'll list what I remember of the canon material that supports this on the off chance anyone's curious.

----

1. In the first episode, it seems obvious that the kids don't know Stan that well (and maybe never met him before at all), indicating that their parents didn't interact with him much. So why would they send them there instead of to a closer relative, or even going on vacation with them for that matter? They basically left their kids alone with a total stranger for several months.

2. In Scaryoke Mabel calls Dipper and Stan her 'two favorite people in the world'. Why would Stan, someone Mabel's only really known for about a month or two, count as Mabel's favorite over her parents that she's known her whole life? Or better yet, why not just say 'two of' instead of only 'two'? Unless she doesn't really car much for her parents, in which case the question should be 'why doesn't she like them'.

3. Right before Bill tricked Mabel, she said she was 'leaving everything behind' and that Dipper would've been the only person she could count on during this time. Again, how did the people she's only known for a couple months become her everything over her parents? And if her parents were supportive she wouldn't have felt so alone at the idea of Dipper leaving. Even Stan said 'least you'll have your brother' instead of 'parents and brother'.

4. This is sort of a companion to points 2 & 3. But Mabel apparently wouldn't care if she never saw her parents again, and actually made that choice when asking for summer to be frozen. Throughout that episode she never once made the wish that Dipper and her would always stay together, or that he would forget the apprenticeship. Instead she just wished that she wouldn't have to leave Gravity Falls and her summer (and presumably, friends and family) behind. Which in turn makes it so she would be giving up her parents. Family and friends are obviously important to Mabel and while in her bubble prison she went to great lengths to prevent anyone from leaving, but didn't seem to care that she'd never see her parents again if she stayed.

5. In the last episode Dipper asks Mabel if she is 'ready to head into the unknown'. And she says no. Why is their home life such an unknown if they have loving parents? Why wouldn't Mabel be ready to go home? Seems to me like she doesn't consider Piedmont her home or her parents family.

----

Sorry for the long, rant-ish, post but these are just some interesting things to take note of! And it's just what I can remember off the top of my head. For all I know there may be even more evidence.

I kind of wonder, based on almost nothing, if the Pines parents were having relationship issues and that's why they sent the kids off, so they could deal with whatever without the kids being around.

Axolotl poem

Does anyone know what the deal is with the kids encountering the axolotl? Everything I find says it's from The Curse of the Time Pirates' Treasure but I bought the book and I'm not finding anything about the axolotl.

The closest thing I could find to evidence (and it's kinda iffy imo) is this discussion:

https://www.reddit.com/r/gravityfalls/comments/4u92dk/what_do_you_think_about_the_axolotl_spoilers/

Which links to this page:

http://disneyxd.disney.com/gravity-falls/a-wrong-turn

Since that's disney's web site, I thought maybe the book somehow directed readers to the site, but again I couldn't find anything. It's possible I missed something, as I wasn't terribly thorough when going through the book, but if this really is canon it shouldn't be so hard to find confirmation of that.

So, does anyone know the truth? Is this really canon? How did the fans find it/connect it to the book?

A very specific path in the book will get you the link to the A Wrong Turn page. You have to go to the future, do the pod race, pick the inferior racer, let Mabel drive, and then there's a part just before the finish where you have the choice between using a burst of fuel or jumping a ramp which Blendin warns might have unforeseen consequences. But if you do it anyway, you get a page with an encoded message directing you to the A Wrong Turn URL.

This was very helpful. Thank you so much!

I did see that page before but I wasn't able to decode it (I'm a major noob when it comes to codes!). I even tried putting it through the online code breakers at themysteryofgravityfalls and couldn't figure it out. Would you happen to know what code/codes it's written in? I'd like to get more skilled with this kind of stuff since it's such a big part of the fandom.

Same anon as above

Never mind! Now that I know its a URL I was able to figure it out. Again, thanks so much!

html and dreamwidth

(Anonymous) 2017-03-16 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone know if there are any lists or something for what html commands work for dreamwidth? The list given in post previews doesn't seem to be very accurate.

Or alternatively, if anyone knows any that could help if they could tell me please! I'm the writer for the pincest vampire fic, and I want a way to differentiate the kids talking through their mental bond vs out loud. Currently I'm using italics for Dipper's thoughts and bold for Mabel, but that makes it hard to emphasize their words, and also makes it weird if I want to emphasize narration text.

I'm craving it today. Something about Soos' combination of daddy issues is doing it for me. He clearly keeps seeking out physical affection from Stan, and Stan isn't usually up for it. I wonder if it's a leftover "we're adult men we don't hug it out" thing, or something else.

Probably doesn't help that Soos does things like take off his shift and then lovingly gaze at Stan while talking about stargazing. You know, marriage is another common way to become part of the family!

I also enjoy Stan being weirded out. The long journey for him to figure out how to feel about it is part of the appeal for me, even if the eventual answer is "nope".

You sold me on this! My thoughts on them were kind of vague before, but letting a near-stranger have total custody of your kids for an entire summer is not the sort of thing a responsible parent would do. Especially a relative with as big a list of criminal charges as Grunkle Stan has! We know that he's fine, but that's not a guarantee. Plus we see Mabel sending a letter instead of calling them, which to me implies that they're vacationing somewhere with no cell service. Not a time you can quickly respond to the concerns of your children.

I don't remember seeing it happen, but something where Stan essentially takes care of them year-round, with occasional visits from the parents would be interesting to me, especially if the justification was a busy work schedule or something.
